Reclassification

Phylogenetic analysis of molecular sequences have led to the subsequent reclassification of species to better match evolutionary patterns

  • Species may have been incorrectly misclassified based on the presence of analogous structures that arose via convergent evolution (no common ancestry)

Historically, figworts (Scrophulariaceae) were a family of flowering plants that consisted of more than 5000 species and 275 different genera

  • Taxonomists examined the chloroplast genes in figworts and found the evidence did not suggest that all the species belonged to a single clade

  • The figworts were subsequently split across five different clades, reducing the number of species remaining in the family by half
